DOMESTIC STUDENTS WAIVER

All full-time domestic students are automatically enrolled in SAIC’s Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). The insurance fee will appear on students’ accounts as an additional charge, separate from tuition and other fees. If students have alternative health insurance coverage, a waiver may be submitted.

To be eligible for a waiver of enrollment in the SHIP, SAIC requires that students provide evidence of coverage equal to or better than the coverage provided by SAIC’s SHIP. Please be advised that the waiver request will be reviewed and verified active with the insurance carrier. Notification of acceptance or rejection of waiver requests will be sent to students’ SAIC email addresses within seven business days.

To qualify for a waiver, your health insurance plan must meet the requirements listed below.

  1. Coverage must be active for the full date range associated with the term(s) for which a waiver is being requested.
  2. Have equivalent coverage, in the Chicago area, to the SAIC’s Student Health Insurance plan including, but not limited to:
    1. Full coverage for pre-existing conditions;
    2. Covers 100% of preventive care;
    3. Unlimited benefits;
    4. And be Affordable Care Act (PPACA) compliant

If your plan meets the above criteria and you want to waive enrollment from the Student Health Insurance Plan, please acquire an electronic copy of the front and back of your insurance ID card and then select the link below to submit your waiver request. Once you login, select the WAIVE button under the “I Already Have Insurance.” section.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WAIVER

All international students are automatically enrolled in SAIC’s Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).

  1. Criteria to submit a waiver request:
    1. Student is sponsored by the government of the student’s home country and is provided through a PPACA compliant plan. If a non PPACA compliant plan, the sponsoring entity must guarantee payment of all health expenses in writing.
    2. Student is enrolled in a US employer-provided group health plan that is PPACA compliant.
    3. If the health plans above do not include medical evacuation and repatriation, a rider must be purchased providing coverage at equal limits to SHIP.
  2. The alternative coverage must meet the following minimum requirements:
    1. Insurance plan must provide coverage for medically necessary care in the Chicago area equivalent to the SAIC’s student health plan.
    2. Provide the Essential Minimum Benefits required by the PPACA with no annual limits. A list of the Essential Minimum Benefits can be found here: https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/essential-health-benefits
    3. Contain no exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
    4. Covers 100% of Preventive Care as defined by the PPACA. A list of these preventive services can be found here: https://www.healthcare.gov/coverage/preventive-care-benefits/
    5. Imposes a deductible that does not exceed $500.
    6. Medical evacuation coverage amount is no less than $50,000.
    7. Repatriation coverage amount is no less than $25,000.
    8. Coverage must be active for the full date range associated with the term(s) for which a waiver is being requested.
  3. If your alternate coverage meets the above minimum requirements, submit electronic copies of the following documents with your online waiver request:
    1. A scanned copy of the front and back of your health insurance ID card indicating the student as a covered member.
    2. A scanned copy of your complete policy, including coverage amounts, exclusions, and limitations in English using US dollars.
    3. A scanned copy of your medical evacuation and repatriation coverage (if you have this coverage).

NOTE: Individual plans, travel plans, or plans that require you to pay for treatment yourself and then apply for reimbursement will NOT be accepted by SAIC for waiver approval.
